The Garuda Purana

One of the eighteen Mahapuranas, told as a dialogue between Lord Vishnu and Garuda, king of birds. It speaks of life, death, rebirth and what waits beyond, and is read aloud in Hindu homes in the days after a death.

Its later part tells of the soul’s journey after death: the road to Yamaloka, the court of Yama, and the Narakas where sins are paid for.

The Court of Yama

Yamadutas, Yama’s fearsome servants, lead the soul across sixteen stations to his court. There Chitragupta, the divine scribe, reads out every deed it has done.

The righteous go by the gentle paths. Sinners take the southern road, and Yama sends each to the Naraka their sins have earned. Turn the page to see all twenty-eight.

After the Narakas

The Narakas are not eternal. They are stations where the debt of one’s deeds is worked off; when the term ends, the soul is born again.

Translations name and order the hells a little differently. These pages follow commonly circulated tellings, and the scenes are an artist’s imagining.

The laws these punishments answer to are Vidura Niti.
